However, the significance of nature goes beyond immediate human needs; it possesses an intrinsic value recognised globally, including through the Convention on Biological Diversity. Despite this, nature faces serious threats, with ecosystems disappearing at an alarming rate due to human activity.
Global commitments and challenges to protect nature
The global community has adopted several goals and agreements to protect nature, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the recent Kunming-Montreal Framework. These initiatives aim to reverse the loss of biodiversity. Nevertheless, the loss of nature continues to accelerate, driven by factors such as land use changes, climate change, and pollution. This loss represents not only a threat to the environment but also to global food security and the livelihoods of people.
The impact of nature loss on hunger and poverty
Natural resources play a critical role in combating hunger and poverty. Over 75% of the world’s food varieties require pollination, and forests provide essential services such as carbon storage and protection against natural disasters. Therefore, the loss of nature directly threatens food security and sustainable development for billions of people, especially those living in close interaction with nature.
The Development Fund's efforts in the fight for sustainable management of natural resources
The Development Fund takes concrete steps to strengthen the sustainable management of natural resources. By supporting local participation and rights over forests and other resources, The Development Fund helps combat environmental degradation. Activities include the creation of local management groups, forest conservation efforts, and the establishment of local seed banks to ensure farmers’ access to seeds. These measures are crucial for protecting the natural resources upon which so many depend.
The path forward for natural resource management
A global effort is required to address the complex challenges associated with natural resource management. Through international cooperation, stronger commitments, and local actions, we can hope to reverse the negative trends threatening nature’s diversity and our collective future. Conserving natural resources is not only an environmental necessity but also a prerequisite for combating hunger, poverty, and ensuring a sustainable future for all.
