EMiS overall objective is directly related to the four thematic priority areas in the Norweigna Action Plan for Environmental Development Assistance. Environmental organizations in Africa, Asia, Oceania and Latin America will with support from EMiS, contribute to:

 

1) Protection of biological diversity and sustainable management of natural resources

2) Water resources management

3) Implementation of climate related activities and increased access to clean energy

4) Reduction of environmental poisons

The first thematic area is emphasised in the 2008-2010 program period, but all the other areas are also covered, particularly climate related activities in order to prepare to and follow up of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in the end of 2009.
